Luke Shaw has admitted that he “can do much better” after suffering a difficult start to his Manchester United career. The 19-year-old, who was signed from Southampton for £27m in the summer, is acutely aware of the need to improve his performances after failing to impress in a United shirt so far.

His third Premier League appearance for Louis van Gaal’s side, in the 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Monday night, proved to be another tough assignment. Albion targeted United’s left flank, where the defensive side of Shaw’s game, in particular his positioning, was exposed on more than one occasion, including the opening goal, when Andre Wisdom escaped to set up Stéphane Sessègnon.

Shaw was honest enough to admit that he has not performed to the level he expects and promised United supporters that there is much more to come from him. “They haven’t seen the best of me yet. I know I haven’t been up to my full potential and I think maybe people can see that at the moment,” he said.

“I am trying hard and it’s about getting used to everything. When you come to a club like this it’s never easy for a young player like me. But I’ll get myself started soon and put in good performances. I wouldn’t say I’ve been horrendous but I know I can do much better. And I need to do better. I’ve come to Manchester United and I know what they need. I’ve been working hard and the performances will come.”

It has been a far from straightforward first few months at Old Trafford for Shaw. The teenager was told by Van Gaal in pre-season that he was “not fit enough to do what I want”, prompting United to draw up an individual training programme for him. Shaw then picked up a hamstring injury and, although he returned to fitness and made his debut for United at the end of September, he was overlooked for the senior England squad this month and instead featured for the Under-21s.

He was grateful, however, to get some more game time under his belt. “It always helps and the main thing for me was it was two 90 minutes for fitness,” Shaw said, reflecting on the under-21 matches against Croatia. “I feel fit but, like I said, I haven’t played my best recently. That’s football. Hopefully I’ll come out of it now. I think I could still get a bit fitter from working hard in training. But I do feel pretty fit.”

Although United twice came from behind, through goals from Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind, to come away from The Hawthorns with a draw, Shaw admitted that it was a disappointing evening. “We knew what we had to do but unfortunately we didn’t get the result,” he said. “It’s definitely two points lost – we’re Man United, we come to win every game. They only had two shots on target [but scored two goals] and that’s not good enough for us. We’ll focus hard this week and be ready for the game [against Chelsea] on Sunday.”
